UK Energy Saving Launch New Energy Saving Calculator

UK Energy Saving has added a new section to their website with the new Energy Saving Calculator. The Energy Saving Calculator has been designed to offer a quick view resource for finding out how to save energy and money around the home. Whether visitors are just starting out in terms of saving energy, or wish to make a serious investment towards reducing their home’s carbon footprint, this new tool on www.uk-energy-saving.com will provide them with some very useful tips.

The Energy Saving Calculator takes on a unique, user-friendly format constructed for ease of use and quick, at-a-glance information. Divided into bronze, silver, gold and platinum categories, the Calculator breaks energy saving into simple free-of-charge measures, low-cost improvements, investment opportunities and renewable energy options. And for each category an illustrated and a tabular guide are provided.
With average costs and savings indicated in each case, visitors can quickly assess which measures suit their lifestyle and budget.

The Energy Saving Calculator can be reached
at www.uk-energy-saving.com/energy_saving_calculator.html and the UK Energy Saving team hope that it will help consumers to get started with energy saving by providing the information in such a simple format.

Tesco Ups the Green Ante with More Green Clubcard Points

Tesco is offering more opportunities to collect green clubcard points as they continue to push their green image. They already offer extra clubcard points for reusing carrier bags, and double points are now available to customers buying organic, fairtrade and energy efficient products. Green clubcard points can also be earned for recycling mobile phones and inkjet cartridges.

Most of these promotions, apart from the mobile phone and inkjet recycling schemes, are scheduled to end in April 2007, so it will be interesting to see whether they will continue to offer green incentives thereafter.

The other major UK supermarkets do have environmental policies, but as yet have not made similar offers to Tesco available to their customers. Watch this space!

For more information on the Tesco green clubcard points visit their website at http://www.tesco.com/greenclubcardpoints/.

London Congestion Charge Extension

The London congestion charge is in the news today as the area covered was extended westwards this morning. There are a number of differing reports about the benefit of this with some groups supporting the move whilst others concerned about whether it will actually help to further ease congestion.

Friends of the Earth have welcomed the zone extension citing the large increase in cyclists in the City since the introduction of the congestion charge in 2003. They have, however, pointed out that, as those living in the new area will not have to pay the full charge, caution should be taken that congestion in the central area does not increase again. More of their thoughts can be found on the Friends of the Earth website.

The London Retail Consortium, the Liberal Democrats and other groups have criticised the move, however. The main concern regards the increase in those who will not have to pay the full charge and there have also been calls for a more flexible approach with different pricing time slots, for example.

Honda believe that the extended area will result in higher demand for exempt vehicles such as those which are electrically powered. They are increasing production of their electric-petrol Civic Hybrid to keep up with the demand.
