REVIEW - Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal by Tristram Stuart

On the one hand this book can make you think ‘where do we start with this problem’, but on the other, the author not only makes you think about what we as consumers can do day to day, but also how we can have influence over suppliers in terms of what is acceptable. Stuart has many suggestions about how the problems of food wastage can be tackled and the reader is certainly left with ‘food for thought’. Despite the large numbers of statistics, this book is well written making it difficult to put down.

REVIEW - Dri-Pak Soap Flakes

I tried the Dri-Pak Soap Flakes out on my hand washing with pleasing results. The flakes dissolved fairly easily in hot water and had no trouble cleaning food marks off a cream dress. A good rinse was needed to get rid of all the soap suds, and afterwards you are left with a ‘clean’ smell rather than the false, slightly chemical smell of some modern detergents. I am certainly happy to continue using this produce for my hand washing.

Ecotricity Launch 'Green Gas'

Ecotricity have announced their plans to offer customers green gas alongside their green electricity. The gas will be produced from food waste using anaerobic digestion and injected into the national grid's gas network - although to start with consumers will actually be paying for the plants to be developed as none currently exist in the UK.

Read more on Ecotricity's plans, and sign up for more information if you are interested, at their website. There is also a discussion on the topic on their blog.

REVIEW - www.compare-phonerecyclers.com

The home page of www.compare-phonerecyclers.com is quite busy but actually the key part where you enter your phone details is close to the top making it simple to see what you need to do. The site gives you the option of simply entering the make and model of your phone, searching phones by manufacturer or from a complete list of phones. Then just one click will compare the cash (or vouchers) currently being offered by the 14 recyclers from which prices are compared. This is a pretty comprehensive list of mobile phone recyclers and we didn’t find a site offering a greater range of comparisons.

Sustainable Shopping

A German consumer guide published in September entitled The Sustainable Shopping Basket is available to view online in English. The German Council for Sustainable Development has updated the document from one published in 2003 and, whilst some of the information is related to Germany, it does give a good overview of how to go about shopping sustainably.

REVIEW - The Green Brief Iphone App

The first screen on the Green Brief Iphone App shows 4 headings - Business, Home, Travel and a section for adding your own tips. When you go into each section it breaks it down into further sections, for example on the home section it has a tip section on Bathroom, Kitchen, Loft, Lounge, Study/Home office and finally Whole Home. Each Tip has a score from 1 to 5 on cost and then the saving you can make and also tells you were you can find more information on the Internet.

The Green Brief Iphone App really is a great App for the price and can only get better with time as more and more information is added.
